Is looking at porn a sin?

By The Narrow teamUpdated

The short answer

Yes. Jesus teaches that looking at someone with lust is adultery of the heart (Matthew 5:28), and pornography is made for exactly that kind of looking. But it isn't an unforgivable sin, and it doesn't define you. God forgives everyone who confesses and gives them power to change.

What the Bible says

Matthew 5:28

“But I tell you that anyone who looks at a woman lustfully has already committed adultery with her in his heart.” (NIV)

Jesus says sin can happen with the eyes and the heart, not just the body. We unpack this verse in what Jesus meant by looking at a woman lustfully.

1 Thessalonians 4:3–4

“It is God’s will that you should be sanctified: that you should avoid sexual immorality; that each of you should learn to control your own body in a way that is holy and honorable.” (NIV)

Purity isn’t a side issue. Paul calls it God’s will for your life.

Psalm 101:3

“I will not look with approval on anything that is vile. I hate what faithless people do; I will have no part in it.” (NIV)

David made a decision about his eyes. What we choose to look at shapes what sticks to us.

Romans 6:14

“For sin shall no longer be your master, because you are not under the law, but under grace.” (NIV)

This is the good news: sin doesn’t get to be in charge of you anymore.

Is it still a sin if no one gets hurt?

People do get hurt. Porn trains your heart to see people as objects, which affects every relationship you have. It pulls your heart away from God. And the people on screen are real image-bearers, many of them harmed by the industry that profits from them. Sin is never really private. It always touches our love for God and for others. Is it worse than other sins?

All sin separates us from God, and all sin is forgiven the same way: through Jesus. But Scripture does treat sexual sin as unique, because “whoever sins sexually, sins against their own body” (1 Corinthians 6:18). It goes deep. That’s why it needs honesty and help, not a quick fix. It’s serious, but it’s not beyond grace. For the fuller answer, read does God forgive porn addiction?

Am I still a Christian if I struggle with this?

Struggling isn’t the same as not caring. Paul wrote, “what I want to do I do not do, but what I hate I do” (Romans 7:15). Hating your sin and fighting it is a sign the Spirit is at work in you. The danger isn’t struggling. It’s giving up the fight or deciding it doesn’t matter.

What does turning away from it look like?

Repentance is more than feeling bad. It means agreeing with God that it’s wrong, confessing it, and taking real steps to change direction. That usually includes telling someone you trust, removing easy access, and building new habits. You won’t do it perfectly, and you don’t have to. You just have to keep turning towards God. Our Christian guide to overcoming lust walks through each step.

What to do next

  1. Confess it to God. Plainly and honestly. He already knows.
  2. Tell one trusted person. A Christian friend, pastor or mentor. Here’s how to find an accountability partner.
  3. Cut off easy access. Install a blocker and change the routines where you usually fall.
  4. Replace the habit. Plan what you’ll do instead when the urge comes. See what to do when an urge hits.
  5. Get daily support. The Narrow is a Christian app for overcoming lust and pornography, with daily Scripture-based lessons and an urge button for hard moments.

You’re not defined by this

If you’re in Christ, you are a “new creation” (2 Corinthians 5:17), not your worst habit. God calls this sin because he wants you free of it, not because he wants you ashamed. Bring it into the light, and let him lead you out.

Frequently asked questions

Is it a sin if I see porn accidentally?

No. Temptation isn't sin; Jesus himself was tempted (Hebrews 4:15). What matters is what you do next. Look away, close it, and move on. The sin is in choosing to keep looking.

Is it a sin to watch porn with my spouse?

Yes. Watching porn together still means looking at other people with lust, which is what Jesus warns against in Matthew 5:28. Intimacy in marriage is good. Bringing other people into it through a screen isn't.

Is reading erotic novels the same as watching porn?

The same principle applies. Jesus's words are about lust in the heart, and written content can feed lustful imagination just as images can. The question is what it's doing to your heart.

Is watching porn a mortal sin?

In Catholic teaching, pornography is grave matter. Whether a specific act is a mortal sin also depends on full knowledge and deliberate consent, and the Church recognises that habit can lessen culpability. Speak with a priest about your situation.
