What does God say about pornography?

By The Narrow teamUpdated

The short answer

The Bible never uses the word "pornography," but Jesus speaks to it directly. He says looking at someone with lust is adultery of the heart (Matthew 5:28). God calls us to purity because he loves us, not to shame us. And he fully forgives everyone who confesses and turns back to him (1 John 1:9).

What the Bible says

Matthew 5:28

“But I tell you that anyone who looks at a woman lustfully has already committed adultery with her in his heart.” (NIV)

Jesus moves sin from our actions to our hearts. Pornography is looking to lust, which is exactly what he describes. We unpack this verse in what Jesus meant by looking at a woman lustfully.

Job 31:1

“I made a covenant with my eyes not to look lustfully at a young woman.” (NIV)

Job decided in advance what he would and wouldn’t look at. Freedom starts with a decision made before temptation arrives.

1 Corinthians 6:19–20

“Do you not know that your bodies are temples of the Holy Spirit, who is in you, whom you have received from God? You are not your own; you were bought at a price. Therefore honor God with your bodies.” (NIV)

Your body isn’t a problem to manage. It’s a place where God lives, and it’s worth protecting.

1 Corinthians 10:13

“No temptation has overtaken you except what is common to mankind. And God is faithful; he will not let you be tempted beyond what you can bear. But when you are tempted, he will also provide a way out so that you can endure it.” (NIV)

You’re not the only one, and you’re not trapped. God promises a way out every time.

1 John 1:9

“If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness.” (NIV)

Forgiveness isn’t earned by a clean streak. It’s given to anyone who confesses.

Is watching pornography a sin?

Yes. Scripture doesn’t list it by name, but Jesus’s words in Matthew 5:28 cover it plainly: looking at someone to lust after them is sin of the heart. That’s hard to hear, but it’s also honest. And it comes with good news. Calling something sin is the first step to being free of it, because God only forgives what we bring into the light. Why does God care about what I watch?

Jesus named the two greatest commandments: “Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength” and “Love your neighbor as yourself” (Mark 12:30–31). Pornography pulls against both, and against a third truth Paul adds.

  • It’s about you. Your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit (1 Corinthians 6:19). God wants you whole, not trapped in a habit that leaves you feeling worse.
  • It’s about God. Loving God with all your heart leaves no room for a rival. Lust quietly takes his place.
  • It’s about your neighbour. Every person on screen is made in God’s image (Genesis 1:27). Many are exploited by the industry that profits from them. [VERIFY: add one sourced fact on exploitation in the industry, with link]

How common is pornography use among Christians?

Very common. Research by Barna and Pure Desire Ministries (2024) found that 75% of Christian men and 40% of Christian women [VERIFY: exact wording of the finding and link to the report]. If you’re struggling, you are far from alone. That’s not an excuse, but it should take away the lie that you’re uniquely broken or beyond help.

Does God forgive pornography use?

Yes, completely. 1 John 1:9 promises that when we confess, God is faithful to forgive and cleanse us. His forgiveness doesn’t depend on how long your streak is or how many times you’ve fallen. Romans 8:1 says there is “now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus”. Shame tells you to hide from God. Grace tells you to run to him.

Can God really free me from it?

Yes, though it usually happens over time, not overnight. God changes us from the inside, and he uses practical things to do it: honest friends, wise boundaries, new habits, and his Word. Freedom rarely looks like never being tempted again. It looks like saying no more often, falling less, and getting back up faster when you do. Our Christian guide to overcoming lust walks through each of these.

What to do next

  1. Be honest with God. Confess it plainly. You don’t need the right words.
  2. Tell one person. Choose a trusted Christian friend, pastor or mentor. Secrecy keeps the habit alive. Here’s how to find an accountability partner.
  3. Remove easy access. Set up blockers and change the settings, places and times where you usually fall.
  4. Plan for urges. Decide now what you’ll do in the moment: pray, leave the room, text a friend, go for a walk. See what to do when an urge hits.
  5. Replace, don’t just resist. Fill the time with things that restore you: exercise, people, Scripture, rest.
  6. Get structured support. The Narrow is a Christian app for overcoming lust and pornography. It gives you daily Scripture-based lessons, an urge button for hard moments, and a circle of people walking with you.

You’re not too far gone

If you’ve read this far, something in you wants to change. That desire is itself a gift from God. He isn’t waiting for you to clean yourself up before he’ll welcome you. He runs toward people who turn back to him. Start today, one honest step at a time.

Frequently asked questions

Does the Bible mention pornography?

Not by name, because it didn't exist in its modern form. But Jesus's teaching on lust in Matthew 5:28 addresses it directly, and Scripture repeatedly calls God's people to sexual purity.

Is it a sin to look at porn if I'm not married?

Yes. Jesus's words on lust apply to everyone, married or single. The call to purity isn't about marital status. It's about honouring God and the people he made.

Will God forgive me if I keep falling back into it?

Yes. God's forgiveness is not rationed. Confess each time, and keep taking practical steps. Repeated falls are a reason to get more support, not a sign God has given up on you.

How long does it take to break free from pornography?

It varies. Many people notice real change within the first few months of consistent effort, accountability and prayer. Expect setbacks, and measure progress by direction, not perfection.

Can a Christian be addicted to pornography?

Yes. Being a Christian doesn't make anyone immune to compulsive habits. Recognising the pattern honestly is an important step, and it's one God meets with grace, not rejection.
